From Sketch to Wax

The custom design process is very personal, precise and intuitive. These pictures show the progression of a custom ring, pictured above in sketch form. Kay uses the lost Wax method of jewelry making. A detailed wax model is created using files, picks, drills, knives, sand paper, and toothbrushes to achieve an exact replica of the jewelry. This particular piece will host a marquise diamond. As more and more wax is carved away, the shape of the diamond also influences the fine details of the ring. Shaping the ring is intuitive for Kay and she creates organic angles that compliment the cut of the diamond.

Next, the wax will be attached to a rubber base that is embedded in a metal flask to be filled with investment. This flask is then heated to burn away the wax, leaving no trace of the model and creating a cavity to be filled with precious metal
